South Korea is not interested in nuclear weapons – 2024-02-10 01:02:13

South Korea has no interest in acquiring a nuclear weapons capability in self-defense. President Eun Suk Yeol reiterated this in a television interview on Wednesday (February 7) night. The interview was pre-recorded before airing. The US news agency AP reported this news.

South Korean President Saif said the country will not seek its own nuclear deterrent in the face of threats from a nuclear-armed North Korea. Because, he has promised to further accelerate nuclear deterrence strategies with his ally, the United States.

In an interview with KBS television that aired Wednesday night, Yun insisted that South Korea has all the necessary technology if it wants to achieve a nuclear weapons capability. But such a move would not be acceptable as a viable alternative. Because, it will destroy the trade-dependent economy of the country.

While stressing South Korea’s commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Yoon said, “If we develop nuclear weapons, we will face various economic sanctions like North Korea, and it will be a serious blow to our economy.”

In 2022, the conservative Yoon took power in South Korea. He made similar comments about nuclear weapons before assuming power. However, as an alternative to owning nuclear weapons, Yun pressed for stronger US assurances on the use of US nuclear weapons for self-defense.

He said Washington would use its nuclear capabilities quickly and decisively to defend South Korea in the event of a possible nuclear attack by North Korea.

Tensions have been high on the Korean peninsula for years. But currently this tension is at its peak. Because North Korea is accelerating its weapons tests. South Korea considers it a threat to provoke a nuclear conflict.
