Around 30 percent of the electricity requirement covered by a new photovoltaic system at the site – 500 tons of CO2 saved at METRO Langenzersdorf
Vienna (OTS) – Wien Energie and METRO Austria are making the METRO Langenzersdorf location climate-fit. Wien Energie installed photovoltaic modules on the roof of the wholesaler, which cover around 30 percent of the local electricity requirements with green electricity. In addition, around 500 tons of CO2 can be saved annually. This corresponds to a CO2 saving of over 4,000 car trips from Vienna to Bregenz.
“As part of the cooperation with METRO, we will equip a total of eleven wholesale stores with photovoltaic systems and invest eight million euros. With the plant in Langenzersdorf, we have already implemented five solar power plants. Next is the Linz location. It is important to gradually put unused roof areas into sustainable use – we are happy to be pulling together with METRO,” said Michael Strebl, CEO of Wien Energie.
METRO Austria CEO Thierry Guillon-Verne explains: “For a future worth living, it is important to think progressively and use energy efficiently. The following applies to all of our locations: We invest in energy efficiency and rely on the economical use of energy. The installation of the photovoltaic system on the roof of our location in Langenzersdorf marks another groundbreaking step for METRO. We are convinced that investments like this, together with Wien Energie, are good and important for the environment and the climate and also make economic sense.”
Green electricity over the roofs of METRO
With the new photovoltaic system on the roof of METRO Langenzersdorf, Wien Energie produces 850 megawatt hours of green electricity annually, which roughly corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 400 average Viennese households. The electricity generated is used directly on site for lighting, logistics and cooling devices. A small portion of the green electricity is also fed into the general power grid.
In recent years, METRO and Wien Energie have already equipped several METRO locations with photovoltaic systems, including the wholesale markets in Vienna-Simmering, Wiener Neustadt and Klagenfurt. The Salzburg location was also recently made more sustainable as part of modernization and equipped with a photovoltaic system. On average, these locations can cover up to 40 percent of on-site electricity needs with solar energy.
