The Salvadoran Social Security Institute (ISSS) held this Friday, June 14, the commemoration of World Altruistic Blood Donor Day, with the motto: “20 years celebrating generosity: Thank you very much, blood donors!”
According to the ISSS, the objective of this festival has been to raise awareness about the need to donate blood, guaranteeing the availability of blood reserves in the hospital network; and thank donors for their voluntary contribution that saves lives.
As part of World Altruistic Blood Donor Day, the ISSS presented recognition to altruistic donors and charitable companies that contribute throughout the year.
«For me it is an honor to be with you and with this slogan of 20 years of generosity. That word encompasses security in transfusions, having the security that we have now. One of the safest bloods is that of the altruistic donor,” said the manager, the deputy manager of ISSS Health Support Services, Nahúm Somoza.
In total there have been 65 companies and 50 altruistic donors who have contributed to the health of many people with their voluntary blood contribution.
For her part, the support services manager of the Medical Surgical hospital, Cristina Orellana, highlighted the importance of altruistic donation to contribute to the support of patients who need hematocompoments.
«This year in particular, it is the greatest celebration, because it shows the gratitude that, not only as health services, we have you altruistic donors, companies that help us and facilitate this work; It is appreciated that we take not only a moment of our time, but something that is part of our being to share,” said Dr. Orellana.
It is worth mentioning that a 500 milliliter bag of blood extracts three types of components or units: red blood cells (which lasts 35 days), plasma (rich coagulation component that lasts a year) and platelets (lasts five days). .
According to official statistics from the ISSS, from January to May 2024, the Medical Surgical Hospital received 13,108 blood donations, of which 1,553 were altruistic and 9,811 were replacements. Of these, 86.35% are replacement and 13.65% are altruistic.
While, in 2023, 28,974 donors were assisted, of which 3,254 were altruistic and 22,557 replacement donors, according to the ISSS.
The ISSS also issued an invitation to the population that wishes to become a possible altruistic blood donor, for this it is necessary to schedule an appointment by entering the page https://www.isss.gob.sv/bancodesangre/.
