The incubation period for monkeypox infection can be from 6 to 13 days, sometimes up to 21 days.

Publika.az reports that this was said by Rita Ismayilova, deputy director of the Special Dangerous Infections Control Center of the Ministry of Health.

He said that the infectious period (duration 0-5 days), high fever, severe headache, lymphadenopathy (enlargement of lymph nodes), back pain, myalgia (muscle pain), strong asthenia (weakness) may be: “The initial symptoms similar to lymphadenopathy compared to other diseases (chickenpox, measles, smallpox) is considered a pathognomonic symptom of monkeypox (belonging to orthopoxviruses and completely abolished). The last natural infection of smallpox occurred in 1977. Smallpox was completely canceled in 1980. Vaccination with smallpox vaccine was stopped in all countries 40 years ago new vaccines, diagnostic methods and antiviral drugs are being developed at the global level to prevent smallpox infection. Thanks to all these preparations, it can be useful for the control and prevention of the monkeypox virus.”

Talking about the initial symptoms of monkeypox, the deputy director noted that skin rashes start 1-3 days after the rise in body temperature: “Rashes are relatively common on the face and extremities. 95 percent are mainly observed on the face. In 75 percent of cases, it affects the inside of the hands and the soles of the feet. In addition, rashes occur on the mucous membrane of the mouth (70 percent), genitals (30 percent), conjunctivae (20 percent), and the cornea of ​​the eye.”

R. Ismayilova said that no case of monkeypox infection has been registered in Azerbaijan: “The process is carefully monitored by the healthcare institutions of our country and the epidemiological situation is under control. If suspicious cases are registered, the Special Dangerous Infections Control Center has all the possibilities for laboratory diagnosis of disease cases by PCR method. To our citizens I would recommend them to use medical masks and observe hygiene rules in public places. We hope that by following all these rules, we will prevent the spread of the virus in our country.”
