Slovakia has agreed to support Mark Rutte’s candidacy for NATO Secretary General – 2024-06-19 17:15:34

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has announced that the country’s authorities have agreed to support the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of NATO Secretary General. This was reported by “Interfax” agency.

Until now, Slovakia was included in the list of countries that support not Rutte, but another contender for the position of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.

At the same time, Slovakian media reports that Bratislava expects the help of the Netherlands in strengthening Slovakia’s air defense in exchange for agreeing to Rutte’s candidacy.

Thus, according to the information of the European mass media, at the moment, only two countries oppose Rute’s candidacy: Hungary and Romania. Meanwhile, Rutte held talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán earlier this week. It is not yet clear whether Orbán has agreed to drop his support for Iohannis.

In order to elect a new Secretary General of NATO, a consensus among the leaders of all member countries of the alliance is necessary.
