Six-day work: When will it be implemented – What will apply and how much will workers be paid?

In July, the six-day work in Greece makes its official appearance, which is expected to be combined with the Digital Work Card.

According to information, the six-day work regime that will come into effect from July 1st will concern the public sector, DEKO, banks, businesses, organizations and continuous operation farms that apply a five-day weekly work system.

“It has been legislated for some more branches, where the production is “continuous flow”, which we had not previously covered, and it gives the right to the employer to ask the employee to work a sixth day with the wages provided by law. The measure covers a relatively small number of workers and, certainly, it is not a question of generalizing the measure to all employees”, said the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security, Panos Tsakloglou, speaking to ERT.

What does the law provide today?

According to the law, the employment of employees, during the additional day, may not exceed eight hours, while overtime and overtime work by the employee is not permitted.

The above employers are obliged to register the details of the working time limits of their employees who will be employed on the sixth day in the declaration of organization of working time before the employees take up service.

Terms, conditions and fees

In addition to the above, employers of enterprises or holdings, which are not by their nature of continuous operation, but may operate during the days from Monday to Saturday for 24 hours with a system of alternating shifts and in which the employees are employed on a five-day weekly basis work, in order to use the sixth day of the week – in exceptional cases, in which the company presents an unforeseeable particularly increased workload – they must:

  • To have declared initially and responsibly to PS ERGANI II that they belong to the specific category.
  • To declare, every time they wish to make use of the 6th day, in advance in PS ERGANI II that the company presents a particularly increased workload during a specific period.

In cases where businesses or holdings have five-day night shifts (00.00-06.00), their employment on the 6th day during the night shift is not permitted.

Where the six-day work regime is prohibited

However, the six-day work regime also has prohibitions. That is: Employees’ employment should not exceed 8 hours during the additional day and overtime and overtime work will not be allowed. However, if businesses or holdings have five-day night shifts (00:00-06:00), then their employment on the 6th day during the night shift will not be allowed at all.
