The many and difficult parliamentary demands of the day were not able to prevent the great success of the event organized by the Association of Daily Regional Newspapers, on Wednesday, March 6, in a central hotel in Athens with the invited members of the Region’s parliamentarians!
More than 80 representatives of the people in the areas where newspapers are published – members of SIPE responded to the Association’s call and attended a meeting to get to know each other, to be informed and to exchange views on the serious problems and prospects of the country’s daily regional press.
“You, perhaps better than anyone else in this country, as regional parliamentarians, know that the daily regional newspapers are the historical and timeless arm of information and information of the citizens of the region, the exchange of opinions and ideas, the polyphony in of democracy itself. We are the conduit that allows your voice to reach citizens and voters” said the President of SIPE in his greeting George Michalopoulosaddressing the invited MPs who, as the President of SIPE pointed out, are not only political figures but also residents of the Region and therefore have direct knowledge of the role and contribution of the regional press in all areas of politics, social, economic and cultural life of the citizens of the Region.
“However, we are not all newspapers the same” pointed out the President of SIPE and continued “Next to the serious and authoritative newspapers that gather the overwhelming percentage of employment in the sector as well as the readability, i.e. the acceptance of the citizens, there are also opportunistic publications, which usually serve personal pursuits of their editors, some of them even illegal or adventurous”.
For this reason, parties and parliamentarians must do their weighing and evaluations. “If there is still a future in the printed press, especially in the region, it belongs to the serious businesses that do their work with professionalism, consistency and responsibility. And we want you to stand by our side. And within your parties and within the Parliament and in society. Because survival struggles are coming for our industry and we want you allies and supporters there” concluded G. Michalopoulos.
The event ended with an emotional but highly symbolic award ceremony. SIPE honored by awarding a special plaque, the newspapers – members of the Association that have completed more than 100 years of continuous publication and circulation, newspapers whose journey over time has left a strong imprint of endurance, consistency and timeless contribution to the space, the place and the people!
