Sindh Assembly: Selfies, swearing in Sindhi language and modesty with fish

The members of the Sindh Assembly elected in the general elections 2024 took oath of office on Saturday despite strong protests from the provincial opposition parties.

In the assembly session, where the newly elected members took oath in Sindhi language, numerous selfies (pictures) were also taken in the house, along with the members of the assembly were treated with sumptuous food.

The meeting of the assembly was called at 11 am in the new building of the Sindh Assembly to take the oath of the newly elected members of the Sindh Assembly.

The meeting started with a delay of 40 minutes under the chairmanship of Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani.

During the Caretaker Government, because the assembly session is not called, every five years after the completion of the term of the assembly, the assembly hall is decorated during this period.

This time too, during the caretaker government, the new building attached to the historical building of Sindh Assembly has been renovated and decorated. New chairs were installed for members.

Last day, it was feared that due to the protest of the opposition parties, not many guests would be invited to the swearing-in session, but as soon as the session started, the guest galleries were packed.

Before the meeting, slogans of ‘Jai Bhutto’ in favor of Sindh’s ruling party, Pakistan People’s Party, echoed from the galleries of the guests.

There were so many guests in the meeting that the guests invited by the members sat in the press gallery.

Members of Sindh Assembly took oath in Urdu, English and Sindhi.

Sindhi is the official language in Sindh. Therefore, not only the members of the assembly, if they want, the oath is taken in Sindhi language, but also the proceedings of the general meeting are conducted in Sindhi language. For which there is also an arrangement for mutual translation.

Members can listen to the proceedings in any language in English, Urdu and Sindhi on headphones.

Dozens of camera persons from local media were present since morning in the media corner under the shed next to the entrance of the old building of Sindh Assembly. After the meeting, various leaders came to the media corner and spoke to the media.

In the assembly building, chicken korma, takke, fish, chicken boti, puri, paratha, rogni naan, tea and coffee were being prepared for the lunch of the newly elected members.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed due to opposition protests outside the Assembly.

Among them were women police officers. The roads leading to the assembly were blocked with containers.

The road coming from the Urdu Bazaar was blocked by placing a container near the Hanafia Mosque. It was blocked with a container near New Sindh Secretariat towards Burns Road.

II Chandragarh Road was closed near the Supreme Court. The approach from the Karachi Press Club was blocked by the Coast Guards, Deen Muhammad Wafai Road near Sindh Wildlife Office.

Only the approach from the Artillery Ground side was open, where a large number of newly elected members or assembly members were being allowed to hold entry passes or media representatives.

The alliance of various political parties in Sindh, Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam announced yesterday that they will protest in front of the Sindh Assembly against the alleged rigging of the elections. Swearing will not be allowed.

But due to the blocking of the roads by the police, the opposition members could not reach the assembly members. A few members arrived, who were arrested by the police. Among them were women.

On the other hand, Rashid Soomro, the leader of Jamiat Ulema Islam Sindh, who came with workers from different cities, was stopped by the police on the Super Highway. After that GUI workers staged a dharna there.

They were allowed by the police to go towards the city after the Sindh Assembly session was over.

On the way, the police also used lathi charge and tear gas.

The protest of various opposition parties in front of the Karachi Press Club continued till evening.
