British journalist John Kampfner, whose father was born in Bratislava, came to us as a reporter even before the fall of communism. However, politics along the Danube did not cease to interest him long after Slovakia became a member of the EU and NATO.

Last summer he reported on the aggressive election campaign for the BBC, now he has returned to follow the situation after the assassination of Robert Fico.

We talked about:

  • what worries him most about the political development in Slovakia;
  • how he perceives the prime minister’s attacks on the opposition, the media and non-governmental organizations, which he accuses of assassination;
  • why the chance of reconciliation does not look promising;
  • what should the democratic opposition focus on, not only in Slovakia;
  • why he is most afraid of Donald Trump’s second victory in the United States;
  • also about the expectation of the historic defeat of the British conservatives and the impossibility of reversing Brexit, which most already consider a mistake.

You came to Slovakia to map the situation after the assassination of Robert Fico. What do you think about her?

I talk to people even when I’m not here. So I watch it pretty closely no matter where I am in the world. I was here for some time before the elections, and Slovakia is quite close to me. My father was born here and I feel an emotional connection to this place. However, everything that is happening in your place is deeply disturbing. It was disturbing when Fico won. And the assassination of his person and the reaction that followed it is also alarming. My overall impression is that people on the liberal side
