Sikkim was flooded by the Teesta river stream –

In the northern part of Sikkim state of India, a section of the Sangalang Bridge under construction of Mangan district has been swept away in the Teesta River. The incident took place on Sunday (June 5th) when the river water increased in heavy rainfall. The important bridge connects Jongju, Chungthang, Lachung and Lachen to other areas of Sikkim by road.

The communication system in the area has been completely disrupted due to the collapse of the bridge. The water level in the Teesta River is rising rapidly due to a few days of rainfall. In such a situation, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued the Red Alert last Saturday (May 7).

The company warns that rainfall and water development in the river can cause floods and landslides in Sikkim’s Mangan, Galshing, Soreng, Gangtok and Pakyang districts. Orange Alert has been issued for the next 24 hours in these districts on Sunday (June 5th).

In addition to the destruction of the Sangalang Bridge, landslides have occurred in other places of Mangan district. Residents of Fidang village are in danger due to severe river flows. Last Thursday (May 27), a tourist car fell into the Teesta river with 4 passengers in Chubombu area in Mangan district.

Rescue operations are still underway. Meanwhile, about 5,700 tourists have been trapped in different areas of Sikkim, of which 3 thousand in Lachung and 5 in Lachen. Rescue operations have been postponed due to adverse weather. The IMD’s warning has been asked to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from the river bank.
