Bella Maya and Beila Maya, the conjoined twins who were born joined at the abdomen on March 15 at the Maternal and Child Hospital, have already been separated.
However, Juan Manuel Ávila, father of the twins, reported yesterday that Bella is serious and doctors are analyzing her possible transfer to the High Specialty Medical Unit Hospital of Cardiology No. 34 of the IMSS for cardiac surgery.
“Beila is in very favorable health, her oxygenation is very good, she is more favorable than Bella,” Juan Manuel said in an interview.
“We have Bella a little delicate because it doesn’t saturate well. “We have her with a high-frequency fan so she can have good oxygenation.”
The little sisters, who shared a liver, are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The state Ministry of Health reported that Beila is reported to be serious, but stable, without ventilatory support and tolerates oral feeding. While Bella is serious and unstable, with ventilatory support.
At less than a month old, the separation surgery was performed on Wednesday, April 10 at this same hospital. “In fact, because of Bella, who was not saturated, the separation surgery that was scheduled for three months was brought forward,” said the babies’ father.
“We are nervous about what’s next for my daughter, because she has had stable moments and, to be honest, very bad moments. “She has had to be told at 1, 2 in the morning that she is sick.”
It is the first time that a procedure of this type is carried out in the Maternal and Child Hospital. A multidisciplinary team of pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, plastic surgeons and nursing staff participated. Juan Manuel, 27, and his wife Jimena Ibarra, 20, are from Saltillo and have another 2-year-old son.
They currently sleep in the Maternal and Child Inn, a space for relatives of hospitalized patients.
“I asked for leave from work because of my daughter’s delicate condition, which was very serious,” shared Juan Manuel, who works as a delivery driver for a company.
“I had to ask for permission to come here and right now I am checking if they will be able to grant me another permit, or I will have to resign, or see what happens next.” Bella and Beila are the first twins to be born conjoined from the abdomen in the Maternal and Child. Previously, the hospital recorded the birth of conjoined twins who shared a chest and heart, but they died at birth.
These types of cases are very rare in the world. On December 13 of last year, the mother, seven weeks pregnant, went to the Maternal and Child Care Center, where she discovered that her daughters were conjoined.
In Nuevo León, only one case of surviving conjoined twins was publicly known: Lupita and Elsa, now 14 years old, born at the University Hospital.
