Germany – Palestinian Prime Minister, Muhammad Shtayyeh, confirmed yesterday, Sunday, that there is “no possibility” for a political process “without a clear ceiling,” especially with the absence of a “partner” in Israel, calling for Palestine to be recognized as a full member state in the United Nations.
This came during his meeting with Norwegian Foreign Minister Aspen Barth Ede, at the headquarters of the Munich Security Conference, according to a statement issued by Shtayyeh’s office in Anatolia.
Shtayyeh spoke about “the impossibility of returning to a political process without a clear ceiling (to end the occupation), especially with the absence of a partner in Israel.”
He added, “What is required is recognition of the (Palestinian) state, full membership in the United Nations, and a UN resolution with a program to end the occupation.”
Shtayyeh discussed with the Norwegian Foreign Minister “international efforts to immediately stop the aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”
They warned that any Israeli invasion of the city of Rafah would have “catastrophic consequences after cramming most of the Gaza Strip’s residents there, committing massacres and pushing them to emigrate.”
He also called for a “stronger” international stance to prevent this from happening.
Shtayyeh said that the priority is “to stop the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and to open all crossings to bring aid into Gaza in a way that meets the need.”
He called on Norway, as Chair of the Donors Committee (AHLC), to “lead a European effort to recognize the State of Palestine, especially with a number of countries beginning to become convinced of the necessity of recognition as the beginning of a political path.”
He also called for “taking concrete steps towards imposing sanctions on Israel for its continued aggression, colonialism and occupation, and boycotting settlements and settlers.”
He continued, “The genocide in Gaza is not only about killing, destroying, preventing basic services, and preventing access to food and medicine, but also about preventing us from providing financial benefits to those who deserve them in the Gaza Strip.”
For his part, the Norwegian Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s “continuous support for the establishment of a Palestinian state in accordance with UN laws and resolutions, and that his country wants an immediate ceasefire and to see a horizon for a political solution.”
Earlier Sunday, the Israeli government approved a resolution proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “rejecting international dictates regarding a permanent settlement with the Palestinians.”
The Hebrew newspaper “Israel Hayom” said that the Israeli government “approved by a majority of votes the decision proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which stipulates the rejection of international dictates regarding a permanent settlement with the Palestinians, as well as the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state.”
The newspaper explained that the decision came against the backdrop of “increasing pressure from the international community” to establish a Palestinian state.
On Saturday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, that Israel has a great opportunity to achieve peace with Palestine.
He added: “We understand and support Israel in order to find a way not to repeat what happened on October 7,” stressing that the establishment of a Palestinian state has become “an urgent need more than ever.”
