Shocking warning from scientists: We are losing this sea – 2024-08-29 08:39:00

Scientists in Turkey have warned that the situation in the Sea of Marmara is getting increasingly critical.

Publika.az “Haber Global” reported on this.

It is reported that the first part of the study “2024 Sea Expeditions to Marmara” in which 8 scientists from the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Middle East Technical University (METU) participated, has been completed.

The scientific committee examined many parameters such as warming, pollution, oxygen values and current directions during four days at sea. As a result, the oxygen level in the sea is very bad. It is reported that there is almost no oxygen left in Marmara after a depth of 30 meters, and the delegation defines this situation as a “coma”. They also said that a situation has arisen where no fish can survive.

Professor Dogan Yaşar, a member of the Working Group on Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), assessed the situation. He noted that the sea actually reached the saturation level in terms of pollution in 1989: “It reached a critical level at the end of the 80s. In 1992, the first explosion occurred in the Sea of Marmara. But later, the Sea of Marmara was used as a septic tank. The population of Turkey since most of them live in the Marmara region, the population’s waste has been dumped here for years.”

The professor made pessimistic statements about the solution: “The danger will not go away, it will continue for many years. After 2021, plans have been made, biological treatment plants have been targeted, but no action can be taken. This is entirely due to our use of Marmara as a septic tank. “Unfortunately, none of the warnings were taken into account.”

Mustafa Yücel, another professor in the team, also made a statement about the impending danger: “As soon as hydrogen sulphide waters begin to accumulate at the bottom, if precautions are not taken, they will slowly deteriorate and rise up. This means the smell, hydrogen sulphide waters washing up on the shore and the formation of mucus. We observe that nitrate will run out in East Marmara in the next 4-5 years.”
