MEXICO CITY (apro).- The virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, rejected the proposal for dialogue to resume relations that the Foreign Minister of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, offered to Mexico yesterday, under the argument that “all the lawsuit” that our country filed before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
There is a trial, that trial has to be resolved. If Ecuador assumes what Mexico is asking for in that trial, then it is already different, but everything that Mexico is proposing would have to be fulfilled,” he said at a conference this Thursday.
The former head of government of Mexico City recalled what happened on April 5 and 6 at the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, in the capital, Quito, when police forcefully entered the residence to take away former vice minister Jorge Glas.
“Ecuador carried out a violent attack on the Mexican Embassy, violently invaded the Mexican Embassy, attacked the diplomatic staff of Mexico,” he said.
She added that, when she was still a presidential candidate, she supported the decision of the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to break diplomatic relations with that country. And she recalled that there is currently a lawsuit in the ICJ that requests the expulsion of Ecuador from the United Nations (UN) “so that there is no repetition, because it was extremely serious, all international norms and rules were violated. What Ecuador did with Mexico is not minor.”
For all these reasons, Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated his rejection of the request for dialogue: “It is not a matter of sitting down and talking, because what Mexico is asking for in this lawsuit is, on the one hand, an apology and reparation for the damage, and on the other hand, On the other hand, the case of the vice president, because he has the right to asylum in Mexico; because the right to asylum is provided by the country that is giving you the right to asylum.”
And he reiterated: “they have to take the step: the public apology, what the lawsuit is asking for and also the recognition of the right to asylum. Ecuador’s aggression against Mexico is not minor.”
The Morenista concluded by saying that “it is a matter of principles and we cannot allow our sovereignty to be violated and our sovereignty was violated in a violent way. So, it is a matter of definition of the Government of Mexico and the president acted well.”
