Shamima Akhter, who received a kidney from cadaveric transplant or brain death Sarah Islam, died. On January 19, 2023, Shamima got a new life through Sarah Islam’s organ donation. But in the end he had to give in to death.
Shamima died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital around 9 pm on Tuesday (April 2) while undergoing treatment. As a result, the two women who received Sarah’s kidney died. Before this, another woman named Hasina who received a kidney died last October.
Professor of Urology Department of BSMMU Dr. Habibur Rahman Dulal confirmed Shamima’s death.
Professor Habibur Rahman said, the first one (Hasina) died of lung infection. The second also left. It is very difficult for us. Shamima was out of our reach for the last six months. Recently her brother said that creatinine has increased, Shamima is completely dry. After three weeks he was again admitted to BSMMU. Although there was some improvement in the beginning, the doctors could not figure out why it was drying up. He was brought to the cabin from the ward with creatinine re-elevated. Even then, as the condition did not improve, he was admitted to the ICU four days ago.
When asked about the cause of Shamima’s death, he said that she was diagnosed with C virus and rare pneumonia. I started dialysis accordingly. Because we have problems here, we took C virus dialysis to the ward. Even then he did not improve. A day was also taken at an outside hospital. As the condition did not change, we were again admitted to the ICU. He died there.
Professor Habibur also said that blood does not work if a patient is hepatitis C positive. This requires special blood, which was also given. But did not respond at the last moment. We were not informed in time even though the condition worsened while staying at home. There was some negligence.
Shamima’s brother Shahzada said, I could not save my sister. Now I am taking it to the village.
On January 19 last year, a 20-year-old girl named Sarah Islam was declared brain dead by BSMMU doctors. That night, his kidney was transplanted into the body of two women. The young woman’s cornea was given to two others.
