Stevenson just retained his WBC lightweight belt after defeating Artem Harutyunyan with a score of 119-109, 118-110, and 116-112 at the Prudential Center, Sunday (7/7/2024). But this victory was criticized by his fans for being too boring.
Throughout the fight, Stevenson was booed by the boxing fans in attendance. Several fans left the arena before the final round, showing their unhappiness with the fight.
This fight, which is considered boring, will certainly hamper Stevenson’s commercial value. Moreover, he is currently a free agent, after leaving Top Rank.
That means Stevenson could talk to other promoters. Oscar De La Hoya has expressed interest in talking to Stevenson about a possible fight with William Zepeda.
Meanwhile, Eddie has previously stated that he is willing to discuss a possible signing with DAZN. “If Shakur wants to secure his future, you are making a significant investment. If it is a two-, three-fight deal, he will make a lot of money, and it will benefit you as well,” he explained as quoted by Boxingnews, Wednesday (10/7/2024).
“I think Shakur, pound-for-pound, is one of the best fighters in the world. He may be undefeated. He’s that good, but I think he’s been promoted very poorly. I think part of that is because when Bob Arum finds out a fighter wants to leave, he gets out of it.”
“For the money he’s made for the show, he’s made a lot of money, but he hasn’t been driven to make it a commercial success. I like him. I think he’s a great fighter and would be a great addition to the Matchroom team. If he’s available, we’ll definitely be in touch, whether it works for both of us, we’ll have to see,” Hearn said.
