Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second consecutive term. The PML-N leader was elected as the 24th Prime Minister of the country in the voting of members of the National Assembly on Sunday (March 3). Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq accepted the nomination papers of both the candidates. In order to win the post of Prime Minister, any candidate had to get at least 169 votes in the 336-seat assembly.

Because in the prime ministerial election his own party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as well as Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) ), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z), Istehqam-e-Pakistan (IPP) and the National Party (NP) were assured of Shahbaz’s support. Pakistani media Dawn reported that Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the 24th Prime Minister after receiving 201 votes in the National Assembly. His rival PTI leader Omar Ayub got 92 votes.

Members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) walked out of the National Assembly as soon as voting began. They had already announced a boycott of the prime ministerial election.

Besides, Sardar Akhtar Mangal of Balochistan National Party abstained from voting.
