Several police officers from Hedel in Gelderland reported an attempted manslaughter last New Year’s Eve. The officers and emergency workers were then hit by heavy fireworks, glass and stones.
New Year’s Eve in the village of Gelderland was turbulent. The Mobile Unit had to intervene decisively several times and in the end the municipality issued an emergency order. According to police, extreme violence was used against emergency workers during the riots.
Ban on fireworks
Although the center of the village was declared a fireworks-free zone, many heavy fireworks were set off. Two cars also caught fire. The police seized a van to inspect its contents, writes Omroep Gelderland.
On January 1, police arrested a 22-year-old man from Maasdriel. He is suspected of throwing heavy fireworks at police officers. It is not known whether he is still in custody.
“It’s terrible to see what the night was like for our colleagues and the firefighters,” says the foreman. “One can imagine that the situation was experienced as very threatening.”
The police are now investigating the causes of the disturbances and trying to find out who was involved. To this end, the police want to speak to four possible witnesses who were on the street on New Year’s Eve.
