Kenyan police have arrested a man they describe as a serial killer in connection with the discovery of nine women’s bodies in a quarry used as a garbage dump.
Police say 33-year-old Jomaisi Khalisia confessed to killing 42 women, including his own wife, since 2022.
The suspect was caught in a bar watching the European Championship final between Spain and England.
The first of the dismembered bodies was found on Friday at the Mukuru quarry in the capital Nairobi.
The people of Kenya are in shock as details of the murders emerge.
“He confessed to luring 42 women, luring them to the dump and killing them between this Thursday and 2022,” said Mohamed Amin, the police chief investigating the murders.
Police displayed to the media some of the items said to have been seized from the suspect’s home.
These items include 10 phones, a laptop, ID cards and women’s clothing.
Police have also cordoned off a former quarry-converted dump for investigation.
According to police, the victims were aged between 18 and 30 and were all killed in the same way: they were cut into pieces with a type of machete and placed in similar sacks and thrown away.
Police said the suspect was still being questioned about the motive for the killings and would appear in court on Tuesday.
The murder police identified the suspect after examining the phone of one of the victims. The phone belonging to Josephine Mulongo Owino was used to detect money movements on the day she went missing.
Police said autopsies were being carried out on the bodies and asked families “who believe their loved ones may be among the victims” to notify authorities.
“It is clear that we are dealing with a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life,” police chief Amin said.
It is reported that a second person who was caught using a phone belonging to one of the victims was also arrested.
This person is also considered an accomplice or a suspect.
The murders are also on the agenda of police inspectors. The relevant institution that investigates police in the country announced that it is investigating whether the police were involved in the crime due to the proximity of the dumpsite to the police station.
The police officers on duty at the police station in this area were transferred to other places for a “fair” investigation.
In Kenya, human rights groups are accusing the country’s police of shooting dozens of people who were demonstrating against a planned tax increase.
Kenya Police Chief Japhet Koome resigned on Friday, a day after President William Ruto dismissed his entire cabinet over protests that have killed thousands.
