“It’s a very painful goodbye.” This is how Major Laila Brunella, spokesperson for the Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG), defined the funeral wake of Sergeant Roger Dias da Cunha, 29 years old. The public official was shot by a man on Friday evening (5/1), in Bairro Novo Aarão Reis, in the northern region of Belo Horizonte. The suspect was on the run after benefiting from an end-of-year escape and not returning to prison.
The soldier’s wake takes place in the Bosque da Esperança cemetery, in the north of the capital. The body was taken away by a fire engine in a procession that started from the Santa Efigênia neighborhood. Vehicles of the Prime Minister, the civil, criminal and federal police and the municipal guard accompanied the route.
Wherever he went, such as Francisco Sales and Cristiano Machado avenues, the sergeant was honored by residents and fellow uniforms. Cars and motorbikes honked in honor of the soldier killed in the line of duty. “They are all very sad. The sadness is visible,” Major Laila said.
The procession was also broadcast on the Instagram profile of the Military Police. The video already has more than 120 thousand views and, in the comments, Internet users have also left their tributes. “Sergeant Dias was a hero even in his death, he honorably donated his organs to save other lives,” commented a follower. “Our brother in uniform should never be forgotten,” says another police officer.
Dozens of people attend the funeral wake. The atmosphere there is one of emotion and many tears.
