#SENEGAL: ECOWAS says no to extending Macky SALL’s mandate

In a press release made public and referenced No. 2 dated this Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States expressed its opinion on the situation considered worrying that Senegal is going through.

The extension of the presidential mandate of President Macky SALL obtained by a vote of the Senegalese Parliament is not to the taste of the sub-regional body. That is why, “advises against any action or statement that could go against the provisions of the country’s Constitution and reminds the population and the political class of their responsibility in maintaining peace and stability in the country“.

Through its press release, ECOWAS “encourages the political class to urgently take the necessary measures to restore the electoral calendar in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of Senegal » and calls on law enforcement to exercise the greatest restraint and protect the fundamental rights of all citizens.
