On the centenary of Joseph Conrad’s death, Álvaro Mera comments on the edition “Selected Stories” (Pocket Publishing – Contemporary, Penguin Random House, year 2024, 509 pages).
Dense, compact, very interesting stories, in which he develops with masterful prose what most writers recognize as Conrad’s main characteristic: the creation of one’s own, original speech, which appropriates English to express in large paragraphs metaphors, ideas and a rather poetic tonewith great musicality, and that captivates the reader, who will then probably become a fan of the writer.
He had a great experience as a merchant seaman from 1870 to 1896, and since then he has lived in England. Of Polish origin, he spoke Russian, French, Spanish and English. In this, his fourth language, he wrote, which brought him fame and recognition from the public and writers in general, especially English-speaking ones.
