The UN Security Council will meet exceptionally on Saturday to vote on a new resolution on Gaza, after the one presented by the United States was vetoed this Friday by Russia and China.
This Saturday’s resolution has been presented jointly by seven non-permanent member countries of the Council: Algeria, Guyana, Malta, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The text “demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan (which ends April 9) leading to a permanent and sustained ceasefire.”
In parallel, it calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and underlines the need to “expand the flow of humanitarian aid.”
In its preamble, it expresses “deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.”
In the session held this Friday, in which the United States proposal was knocked down, Russia and China have already announced that they will vote in favor of Saturday’s resolutionwhich would ensure the nine votes necessary to approve a resolution.
However, it is not clear what the position of the United States will be, which as a permanent member has veto power (a power it has already exercised three times regarding the war in Gaza).
