Scholz warns of the danger that leaving the EU would pose for Germany

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has warned of the danger that leaving the European Union (EU) would pose for his country during a speech given this Wednesday before the Bundestag (German Parliament).

The head of the Government indicated that in the US “right-wing populism” currently enjoys great support, while in the United Kingdom it has caused an “economic disaster with Brexit”, which is why he considers that the task of German politicians is to “stop this trend” together.

“It would be the biggest destroyer of prosperity for Europe and Germany that could happen,” continued the leader of the German Social Democratic Party. “Our country has benefited like no other from the European Union and cooperation within it,” he added.

Last week, Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right opposition party Alternative for Germany, said Britain was “absolutely right” to leave the EU and Germany should also hold its own vote on membership in the bloc.

In this sense, the politician – whose party leads the polls in several federal states of the country before the regional elections in September – promised that, if she comes to power, her political party will promote a Brexit-style referendum. With RT
