Saudi League ‘completely changed the football market’: Manchester City manager

Pep Guardiola, the manager of British football club Manchester City, has said that the Saudi Pro League has completely changed the market of the game and he expects more and more top players to move to Saudi Arabia.

City winger Riyad Mahrez joined the list of big names to join Saudi football this week, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and a host of other players from Europe’s top leagues.

Mahrez, who is from Algeria, joined the Saudi club ‘Al-Ahly’ in a deal worth 30 million pounds.

On Saturday, Bayern Munich-bound Sadio Mane looked set to join the Saudi Arabia move trend.

“The Saudi league has completely changed the market,” Guardiola said on the sidelines of a friendly with the Korean club in Seoul.

According to him: ‘A year ago when Cristiano Ronaldo became the first major player of a Saudi club, no one could have imagined how many great and extraordinary players of high quality were going to play in the Saudi league.’

According to Guardiola, more and more big names will be part of the Saudi league in the future.

He said he had a ‘special relationship’ with Mahrez.

“He’s one of the players I’ve seen in my career and whose game I’ve enjoyed the most. The success he got in five or six years was a major role.’
