Iraq – Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan discussed developments in the northern Kurdistan region with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein on Wednesday evening.
This came according to two separate statements by the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
A statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry stated that Minister Bin Farhan made a phone call yesterday, Wednesday, with his Iraqi counterpart, and discussed “regional and international developments, especially the recent developments in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.”
The two sides discussed, according to the statement, “fraternal relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them in various fields.”
In a related context, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that “a phone call took place between the two ministers on Wednesday, during which they discussed bilateral relations.”
The two sides also discussed “current regional and international issues of common interest, particularly the Iranian aggression against the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.”
On Monday evening, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it launched missile attacks in the city of Erbil in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, targeting what it said was “the main headquarters of the Israeli foreign intelligence service (Mossad).”
The Revolutionary Guard said that the attacks were “a response to the terrorist crimes recently committed by Iran’s enemies.”
At dawn on Tuesday, the Security Council of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq announced, in a statement, that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard “launched an attack with ballistic missiles on several areas in Erbil on Monday evening.” Resulting in the death of 4 civilians and the injury of 6 others.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani considered, on Tuesday evening, that the Iranian bombing represented an “aggressive act” and a “dangerous development that undermines the strong relations” between Baghdad and Tehran.
