With politics agreement to impose sanctions against Russia against 30 persons and two entities related to the death of Alexei Navalny, the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels concluded yesterday. The new package of sanctions reached by European ministers includes restrictive measures against Russian judges and prison and government officials who, as EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, are considered responsible for Navalny’s death last February. As for the names of the people who will be subject to the sanctions, they are expected to be announced after the restrictive measures in question have been officially adopted. The political agreement on new sanctions against individuals and entities in Russia emerged as part of a briefing to foreign ministers by the European Union’s Special Envoy for Sanctions David O’Sullivan, with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stressing earlier that sanctions are not always an effective means.
