The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will announce this Monday, April 29, his final decision on his continuity as head of the Executive, after he stepped aside for five days to reflect, an unprecedented break for a ruler since democracy was restored in Spain. .
The PSOE, meanwhile, waits in suspense for the decision made by the general secretary of the socialists and its closest circle admits that it does not know what will happen. In any case, they point out that Sánchez will decide on a personal level, only together with his wife Begoña Gómez.
Therefore, with Sánchez locked up in La Moncloa and with little contact with his collaborators for days, the socialist leadership is making an effort to send public messages and “positive energy”, as defined by the vice president and deputy general secretary of the PSOE, María Jesús Montero, to convince him to stay.
Sánchez has not seen his ministers since Wednesday, when he published a surprise letter addressed to citizens in which he announced that he was clearing his public agenda for a few days to reflect on whether it is worth continuing to lead the Government. In the same text he indicated that this Monday he would appear before the media to communicate his decision.
The lawsuit against his wife as a trigger
The trigger for this crisis was the complaint filed by the organization Clean Hands against Sánchez’s wife for alleged influence peddling and corruption in business, due to her relationships with companies that have received public funds.
That same Wednesday it was learned that a judge in Madrid decided to open preliminary proceedings as a result of that complaint and Sánchez came forward in the Government control session. Without anyone expressly asking him about this matter, he said: “On a day like today and with the news that I have learned, despite everything, I continue to believe in the Justice of my country, in its autonomy and independence.” Hours later, that same afternoon, he posted the letter on his X account (formerly Twitter).
In the text he denounced a campaign against him and his entourage that has been going on for months and pointed directly to the PP and Vox leaders Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal, whom he accuses of “overacting.” “In this outrage, as serious as it is crude, both are necessary collaborators with a far-right digital galaxy and the Clean Hands organization,” he said.
“In short, it is an operation of harassment and demolition by land, sea and air to try to make me weaken politically and personally by attacking my wife,” which includes the PP’s complaint to the Conflict Office of Interest, the journalistic information about his wife and now the complaint from Manos Limpas.
