San Marcos gang members sentenced to 20 years for murdering woman

The Prosecutor’s Office obtained a 70-year prison sentence for gang member Wilber Jhovanny Hernández Álvarez, who was prosecuted for two homicides and illegal limitation on freedom of movement.

According to tax investigations, this criminal is guilty of murdering two people, including a soldier.

These crimes happened in the district of Jicalapa, jurisdiction of La Libertad Costa, between 2017 and 2018.

“This terrorist also arrived at the victims’ home, in the company of another gang member, and threatened them with death to make them leave their homes,” the institution detailed regarding the gang member’s actions.

According to official records, gangs intensified armed attacks against soldiers and police officers in 2017. One of these homicides occurred in the early hours of October 13 of that same year when gang members ambushed a soldier in the Argentina canton, in Jicalapa.

A week later, the authorities reported the murder of a sub-sergeant of the Armed Forces Pedro Enrique Salguero Landaverde who was shot by gang members in the Lupita Dos neighborhood, La Joya canton, Coatepeque district, municipality of Santa Ana Este.

At the end of that year, authorities reported the murder of at least 45 police officers and more than 18 soldiers who were ambushed by criminal groups.
