Sagittaria, an international drag star

Last Thursday, June 13, the Spanish drag artist, Sagittaria, visited Torreón as part of her tour of Mexico. The drag queen was in a renowned club located in the downtown area of the city.

The global star, known mainly for her participation in the reality show Drag Race España in its first season in 2021 and where she was a finalist, as well as in Drag Race España All Stars (2024), spoke exclusively with El Siglo de Torreón, where she told how she felt about the reception from the Mexican public, the music that inspires her, as well as the differences she has seen between Spanish drag and Mexican drag.

She is one of the youngest drag artists to reach a platform like Drag Race, as she entered the competition when she was 22 years old. Just in her twenties, she has already managed to tour various parts of the planet with her talent and beauty.

How has the Mexican public received you?

Incredible. I always say it, the Mexican public is the best public I have ever seen in my life. You know there is no but, the people are very loving, very respectful, it is truly, honestly, the best audience I have ever had in my life. There is no other word to define it.

What makes the Mexican public different?

Precisely the heat of Mexico, not the real heat, because that too. The people are very welcoming. They love to see people coming, the word is a bit “welcoming”, right? That welcomes you and makes you feel like you are at home.

How did you find the drag scene in Mexico?

For example, in Aguascalientes, I haven’t had time, because we arrived just enough, and we left very early the next day, and I didn’t have time to see the drag scene. Yes it is true that I saw a dredge called ADN. In Cancun I was able to see many, very talented ones, one of them is called Lupe and the drag scene there in Cancun is incredible, they have an incredible production. And in Guadalajara I was able to see more people, the dredgers who performed the day I performed in Babel and also people from, for example, La Más Draga, Aviesc Who?, for example Mista Boo! I feel that the culture of Guadalajara is also very cool, drag culture is very strong in Guadalajara.

What makes Mexican drag different?

I think that everything goes bigger here, it’s like more, hyper mega big suits. I really dream of wearing suits like the ones they wear here, I love them. I believe that, that they take it to a platform that in the end allows you to wear huge suits and incredible suits. For that part, it’s like, I don’t think any drag is better or worse, but that’s what Mexican drag is, it’s very, the word I think is great. Take it to the maximum.

And in Spain what is drag like?

Maybe in clubs people can’t be as produced either, it costs a little more to work. I think that here the dredgers have a little more opportunity, the local ones too, to have fixed sites, it is so difficult there, very difficult. Very few have residence there. Here (in Mexico), people go to bars to see the drag queens, there (in Spain) it’s like going to a party, there are drag queens, that’s great.

Would you like to return to a drag reality show?

Maybe you could encourage me to do one of La Más Draga, or a Global (All Stars Drag Race) or something like that, I would really like that. The truth is that I would love a La Más Draga, especially to find myself in a different register, that is, being me, but perhaps being a little more than what the public here expects, but bringing it to me.

What do you think about being considered a controversial RuGirl? Do you like it?

Yes I like it. There are many people who use it as an excuse to call me stupid, but really stupid people are the ones who don’t give their opinion. People who have an opinion and don’t give it are people, well, maybe they are afraid of the format. I was not afraid to say things as I thought. So, I don’t think it’s controversial either, but I do think it’s real. I believe that there are many drags who have not taken advantage of the pull and have not been able to give an opinion.

What else would you like to do as a Sagittaria?

I would really like to be able to travel a lot more and go to places I haven’t been. For example, being in Mexico is now a life goal for me. I mean, I would never have said that the Sagittaria from five years ago, when it started, would be able to tour Mexico, for me this is already a dream. I believe that everyone creates their goals and I believe that I have more and more. I always try to go further and reach more people, that is what fulfills me.

Would you like to explore acting and other art like Sagittaria?

I would love to explore fashion especially. What with parades and all this, I have done it sometimes, but it is true that in Spain it is also very difficult.

Would you like to work with a Mexican pop star?

Thalía, I would love Thalía, it would be amazing.

What singers inspire you in Spain?

From Spain, honestly to me, the Spain that I like, that I consider iconic, I would tell you Jurado, Mónica Naranjo, obviously. The folkloric ones, that is, Lola Flores. Let’s see, obviously Rosalía has also rocked it, an icon. Folkloric Spain is the one that most represents Spain and a lot of Rosalía. In the end there are also many new artists, for example, it could be Aitana, there is also Belén Aguilera, it is incredible, the best there is in Spain right now. But it is true that at the moment, I believe that there is no one at the level of Lola Flores, by Rocío Jurado, let alone Rocío Dúrcal.

What is your favorite part of doing drag?

I think I like the scenario a lot. Acting is literally one of my favorite things, I love it. In fact, if I didn’t act and were more of an event girl, if I were the image of some event, it wouldn’t fulfill me, I need to act, I need the connection with the public.

What songs do you like to do in your show?

I really like Ariana Grande, I really like Lady Gaga, I love American pop divas, I love that style. Beyoncé lately.

Describe Sagittaria in five words

Iconic, I would say, fashion, dancing, jumping to the ground, blonde and well, a little mischief. “Lust that’s the word”
