Sabbagh confirms to “La Croix” the necessity of urgent UN action to stop the ongoing Israeli attacks and violations

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Bassam Sabbagh received today the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, accompanied by Major General Nirmal Thapa, Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, they discussed what UNDOF is doing in the separation zone, and the facilities provided by the Syrian government in order for the force to fulfil its mandate under the relevant Security Council resolution.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stressed the need for the United Nations to take urgent action to stop the ongoing Israeli violations against our people in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967, as well as to put an end to the repeated Israeli attacks on Syria’s sovereignty and its targeting of vital infrastructure and facilities, stressing the importance of the reports and briefings of the peacekeeping mission including accurate monitoring of these attacks and violations.

For his part, the Under-Secretary-General presented the objectives of the visit, which are to review the work of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), visit its sites, and hold meetings with the relevant Syrian officials. He also referred to the efforts made by the United Nations to avoid any escalation in the region, and reiterated his thanks and appreciation for the facilities provided by the Syrian government for the work of UNDOF.

The meeting was attended by Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Qusay Al-Dahhak, Head of the Truce Delegation Office, Brigadier General Azdshir Hourani, and Minister Counselor Safwan Barakat from the International Organizations Department.
