Russia’s ‘spy whale’ Hvaldimir found dead

Hvaldimir, known as Russia’s ‘spy whale’, was found dead in Norway’s Risavika Bay. The cause of his death is not yet known, said non-profit organisation Marine Mind.

Marine Mind said in a statement regarding Hvaldimir’s death: “It is with great sadness that we share the news of Hvaldimir’s death. This morning, after receiving a tip from a local resident, our team arrived at the scene to find that Hvaldimir was no longer with us. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. Hvaldimir was not just a beluga whale; he was a beacon of hope, a symbol of connection, and a reminder of the deep bond between people and the natural world. Over the past five years, he touched the lives of tens of thousands of people, bringing people together in awe of the wonders of nature. His presence taught us the importance of protecting the oceans, and in doing so, taught us more about ourselves. Hvaldimir bridged the gap between people and wild animals in a way few others could. He was special to so many, and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of encountering him.”

Known as the spy whale, Hvaldimir was seen swimming off the coast of Norway with a camera attached to a mechanism in 2019. There were claims in Western media and social media that the whale could be a ‘Russian spy.’ In Norwegian, ‘hval’ means whale. The whale was named ‘Hvaldimir’ after Russian President Vladimir Putin.
