MOSCOW – Newly emerged video shows a long-range missile donated to Ukraine by the West being stripped down after being shot down by Russian air defenses.

Britain and France have provided dozens of cruise missiles, known as Storm Shadows in the UK and SCALP in France. The missiles were donated to Ukraine for use in its conflict with Russia.

RIA Novosti published a three-minute video on Friday (29/3/2024) showing one of the projectiles being dismantled by Russian military technicians.

The footage shows several important components of the missile being shot down, including the rocket engine.

However, certain details are blurred in the video, and the identity of the technician who removed the weapon is also withheld.

He was reportedly one of a team of experts specializing in rocket engineering, RIA Novosti reported.

They studied Western weapons and formulated protocols on how to safely neutralize them. The instructions were then shared with other ordnance disposal units.

In the case of the Storm Shadow missile, this research has the added benefit of providing the Russian military with insight into how to better counter such missiles.

“The missiles are constantly being improved, but the air defense forces are also getting better because we can study certain parts and their working algorithms,” explained the specialist.

The news agency said the Storm Shadow in the video likely malfunctioned due to Russian electronic countermeasures and fell to the ground.

The footage shows the missile itself, its nose fairing, its explosive charge fuse and other parts.
