Russian forces have attacked various power plants, including the largest hydroelectric plant in Ukraine. Three people were killed in the attack on Friday (March 22), Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Valeriovych Galushchenko said. US-based news agency AP reported this news.
Galushchenko said that Russian forces attacked drones and rockets throughout the night. This is the biggest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent times. He also said that Russia’s aim is not only to cause damage, but also to cause major disruptions in the country’s energy system. They have resumed attacks like last year.
The Dnipro Hydroelectric Station caught fire due to this attack by the Russian forces. It supplies electricity to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant located in Zaporizhia.
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said early Friday that the plant’s 750-kilovolt main power line had been severed. Only a low voltage backup line is working.
Ukraine’s state hydropower agency said a Russian missile hit the country’s largest dam. which is located in Zaporizhia. However, even if the missile hit, there is no risk of a crack in the dam, the government agency said.
