Moscow has summoned US Ambassador to Russia Lynn Tracy on charges of meddling in internal affairs. Russia summoned the US ambassador on Thursday (March 7). Qatar-based media Al-Jazeera reported this news.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Washington of funding three anti-Russian non-profit groups. In addition, American diplomats are spreading misleading information about the presidential election of March 15-17 in Russia. They have also been accused of spreading confusion by saying that Russia will conduct a special military operation in Ukraine.
These allegations against US diplomats will be vigorously pursued, the statement said. It has also warned that US embassy officials involved in such activities may be expelled.
Russia and the United States recently expelled dozens of each other’s diplomats as relations between the two countries deteriorated, the country’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported. Especially since the Russian campaign in Ukraine, the relationship between the two countries continues to deteriorate.
Three non-profit NGOs, the American Council for International Education, Cultural Vistas and the Institute of International Education, have been ordered by Moscow to freeze funding. Moscow has cracked down on Western-backed NGOs and civil society groups that espouse attitudes and values alien to Russian society. However, the United States and Western countries have rejected the allegations of financing such institutions.
