Russia could be behind the Havana Syndrome, study reveals

MADRID, Spain.- A recent advance in the investigations into the “Havana Syndrome” pointed to Russia as a possible culprit. According to a joint investigation by The Insider, The Mirror and CBS’ “60 Minutes,” cited by the BBC, may have been attacked by Russian sonic weaponry.

The Insidera Russia-focused investigative media group based in Riga, Latvia, reported that members of a Russian military intelligence unit (GRU) known as 29155 had been located in places and times where “anomalous health” incidents were recorded.

The new investigation alleges that agents from the military intelligence unit may have targeted the brains of American diplomats with “directed energy” weapons.

The year-long study also reported that senior members of Unit 29155 received awards and promotions for work related to the development of “non-lethal acoustic weapons.”

Despite these allegations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has denied that there is evidence of Russian involvement and has called the accusations unfounded.

“Havana Syndrome” gets its name from the first cases being detected in the Cuban capital in 2016. US personnel affected by the syndrome, including staff from the White House, the CIA and the FBI, have experienced symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, difficulty concentrating and a loud, painful sound in the ears.

More than 1,000 reports of this mysterious ailment have been recorded, and dozens of cases are still officially considered unexplained. US lawmakers have passed laws aimed at supporting victims, and those with confirmed brain injuries from the disease are eligible to receive payments.

Among the most recent victims is an FBI agent specializing in counterespionage, whom “60 Minutes” identified as Carrie to protect her identity. Carrie suffered an acute attack while at her home in Florida in 2021.
