Under Eusebio, Portugal finished third in the 1966 World Cup. It was the longest streak in a major tournament in football history. In 2016, it was overtaken by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. They won the Euro under the leadership of CRSeven. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said Portugal’s current generation of players deserved to win this year’s championship, before heading off to play his sixth Euro.
Portugal aim to lift the trophy in Germany with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Paris Saint-Jameir Vitinha and Man City’s Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias. Ronaldo himself is in great form. He scored a record 35 goals in the Saudi Pro League.
Ronaldo said, ‘I believe the current generation deserves to win such a big competition. The semi-finals? I hope we go further.’
The 39-year-old forward thinks winning the title is possible, ‘we have to go step by step. To be in the moment, not to be restless, just like we have been until now. I believe it is possible. We know it’s a short competition, but the team is ready.’
Ronaldo, who is participating in a record sixth European Championship in Germany, is joined in the current squad by 2016 Euro winners Pepe and Rui Patricia. Ronaldo prepared by scoring a pair of goals against the Republic of Ireland in the last match before the Euro, ‘I enjoy football, the record is the result. Don’t play for goals, that’s how it comes. It’s my sixth European Championship, I want to enjoy it in the best possible way, play well and make sure the team wins.’
Portugal’s Euros will begin on June 18 against the Czech Republic. The remaining two matches are against Türkiye and Georgia.
