Two teams of robots took to a small artificial soccer field today at a summit in Geneva on artificial intelligence showcasing the wide-ranging uses of this technology.
Organizers said that the Global Summit on Artificial Intelligence for Good shows the ways in which people’s lives can be improved or even completely changed through this technology.
“Sometimes we think that artificial intelligence is a big thing,” said Thomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations International Telecommunication Union, which organized the event.
He added, “At the same time, artificial intelligence can be integrated into many matters in daily life, whether in the field of flood forecasting, disaster management, early warning systems, agriculture, or health. (It can be used) in all fields.”
The exhibits included prosthetic limbs that can recognize user behavior and adapt to muscle activity, as well as devices that help blind people avoid obstacles in the street, and robotic cats and dogs that act as companions.
The robots that play football were made by a group of students from ETH University in Zurich. The two teams were kicking, passing and tracking the ball based on input from sensors.
“The project provides our undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain experience on a fully automated platform,” said Jan Niko Zajic, the scientific supervisor of the project.
“It is a platform for testing algorithms that can be used in the real world later,” he added.
