The cast of the Friends series did not pay tribute to Matthew Perry during the Emmy Awards ceremony because his death is “still very recent”.
The actor, found dead in his hot tub in late October at the age of 54, was honored during the “In Memorium” portion of the ceremony, but his former colleagues Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer were honored not assembled for the occasion.
When asked about the possibility of having them participate in this tribute, Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, executive producer of the ceremony, told the Hollywood Reporter: “It’s still very fresh for them.”
Jesse Collins, who also served as executive producer, admitted that the idea was discussed “very early” but that they wanted to respect the actors’ wishes.
He adds: “We talked about it very early on, but I can imagine that, for their part, they are mourning someone who was still very close to them. I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect the fact that they are family. It was probably a little too soon.”
