Rhine water level in Lobith appears to have reached its highest point • Lower than expected peak, less rain than expected in Germany

The high water that some parts of the Netherlands are experiencing is an enrichment for nature. This is what Twan Teunissen, ranger of the Staatsbosbeheer in the river area, says. “It may be that next year we will encounter plants and insects that were not found in our country before.”

The high water levels are the result of heavy rainfall in the Netherlands and Germany. The water flowing into our country from Germany carries sand and clay, explains Teunissen. “That sand is an ideal germination place for some plants and insects, such as bees and beetles, that thrive on bare soil. All kinds of seeds and plant larvae are also swept away,” he says. “High tide is very conducive to biodiversity.”

Teunissen points out that there are also animals that suffer from water. For example, some snails, mice and moles will not survive. “Most of the animals will make it to the bank, but some won’t,” Teunissen says. ‘Some species suffer serious damage, but in general the animals manage to survive well. These water levels are not that exceptional, they occur on average once every four years.’

Deer, horses, cattle and hares generally know how to swim to shore. To ensure their peace and quiet, several nature reserves are currently partially closed. Teunissen: “The animals temporarily live in a smaller area and can be frightened by walkers and dogs, causing them to flee into the water and drown.” (AP)
