Focusing on “quality instead of quantity” is an important contribution to tourism in Austria and especially in the Salzkammergut
„Especially in the Salzkammergut we often suffer from day and mass tourism. In order to get ideas as a member of the tourism committee on how we can counteract this, I organized a meeting with tourism representatives from my region in spring 2023. The first expert to come was tourism spokesman Franz Hörl and then there was a follow-up appointment with State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler. Wolfgang Gröller emphatically addressed a wish to all of us: the return of the international advertising platform Guide Michelin,” said National Council member Bettina Zopf from the Salzkammergut.
Tourism should become more sustainable and jobs more attractive. Culinary trips are part of the whole. They make a significant contribution to strengthening the gastronomy and hotel industry and making it gentler through international multi-day tourism. An issue that can only be solved Austria-wide. This opinion was also shared by the federal states that are currently not included in the Michelin Guide like Vienna and Salzburg and are a blank spot on the map of this international travel guide.
Wolfgang Gröller states: “This step brings us back into the limelight in the international culinary world. Thanks to politicians, Austrian advertising and regional associations for the opportunity to show what we can do.”
„With the announcement of the longed-for return of the Michelin Guide from 2025, Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler and ÖW boss Astrid Steharnig-Staudinger have sent an important signal for local gastronomy and tourism,” said VP Tourism spokesman Franz Hörl.
„In addition to the landscape, winter sports and the many cultural sights, cuisine is a strong motive for a holiday in Austria. The Michelin recommendations and stars also offer a further incentive for international guests and also attract respected chefs and young talents to Austria. As an international currency, the stars also help to keep these top chefs in the domestic tourism industry,” said Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler.
„State Tourism Councilor Markus Achleitner and his colleagues from the federal states also pushed this forward significantly. Implementation was only possible through the cooperation of the federal and state governments,” said MP Bettina Zopf.
The international positioning of Austria as a high-quality holiday destination is clearly planned in the Austria Plan 2030. By reintroducing the Michelin Guide, Austria will be positioned more strongly internationally as a culinary destination and our tourism location will be placed on an even broader foundation.
