Tripoli, February 25, 2024 (Al Anbaa Libyan) – These days, at the Sports City in Tripoli, the activities of the Goalball Referees Course for the Blind, organized by the “Noor” Association for the Blind, in cooperation with the Libyan Paralympic Committee, will resume, which began on February 23 and continues until the 28th of the same month.
Ali Embarak Al-Obaidi, a member of the technical committee and one of the referees participating in this session, stated to the newspaper “Al-Anbaa Al-Libya” that this session is an important step towards enhancing and opening the horizons of blind people’s participation in sports, integrating them into society, and providing them with equal opportunities to reach their full potential.
Al-Obaidi pointed out that this course aims to qualify referees specialized in the field of goalball, noting that goalball is a team sport for the blind, and is played with a ball that contains internal bells that enable them to hear it and recognize the location of the ball.
He explained that it was divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part was held at the headquarters of the “Al-Nour” Association, daily during the morning period, and included theoretical lectures on the laws of goalball, refereeing signals, refereeing techniques, and methods of managing matches.
As for the practical part, it was presented in the Tripoli Grand Gymnasium in the Sports City, and included practical training on arbitration, simulating matches, and evaluating the referees’ performance.
Al-Obaidi continued that the course was supervised by international experts in the field of goalball, most notably Bulent Kamyon, an expert and international referee from Turkey, and Sameh Al-Ghamri, an international coach from Egypt.
Al-Obaidi said that a wide range of referees from the central, southern, western and eastern regions participated in the course, in addition to female students from the College of Physical Education.
Al-Obaidi noted that this course is considered an important event in the field of disability sports in Libya, as it contributes to the qualification of goalball specialist referees, raising the level of refereeing in this sport, encouraging the participation of blind people in sports, and integrating them into society.
