Remittance shipments from Europe to Cuba are interrupted

MÉRIDA, Mexico -. The Financial Corporation Cimex SA (FINCIMEX) of the regime on the Island announced this Saturday that remittance services from Europe are interrupted.

The cause of the temporary cessation is “the interruption of global operations of the English company Small World Financial Services, which since 2011 has been dedicated to sending remittances to Cuba,” states the note from the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

The state corporation “so far does not have an official statement from Small World that details the causes or the scope of the interruption.”

In this way, FINCIMEX “invites senders from Europe to use other official channels for remittances to Cuba such as tocopay.com,grupotitanes.com, moneyexchange.es and fonmoney.com through oceancard.com.”

According to official information “these channels guarantee direct remittances to bank accounts, Classic cards and AIS in minutes and with competitive prices.”

FINCIMEX regrets the interruption because due to its “stability, security and immediacy, the financial service with the English company Small World Financial Services was in high demand from Europe.

Likewise, it clarifies that at the time of the closure there were no operations in transit or pending to Cuba.

“Fincimex SA explained that they will keep consumers informed about any news of interest in relation to this unexpected interruption. Those interested can request more information through the telephone number 72201199 or stay informed through their official profile on Facebook,” the information concludes.

Indeed, this Saturday the user who tries to access Small World services is redirected to a page where it is reported that the company “has stopped accepting new clients or agents, accepting funds or making payments for existing clients through all channels, including any of its agents, branches, websites or mobile applications.”

Remittances to Cuba

Morales classified remittances into three stages. The first of them corresponds to the period 1991-2006 and marked by the reforms of the dictator Fidel Castro to alleviate the crisis euphemistically called “Special Period”.

The years from 2007 to 2018 constitute the second stage, a period defined by the Guidelines of the Communist Party of Cuba and the transformations made by Raúl Castro after inheriting power from his brother.

While the third stage corresponds to “continuity”, the most recent period corresponding to the Miguel Díaz-Canel regime and the implementation of the stores in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), the Ordering Task, the new Exchange Market and the “banking.” ” of the economy.

According to the study, throughout the three stages, shipments from abroad constituted the financial basis that served to weave the dollarized retail infrastructure that exists today throughout the Island.

In that sense, remittances have not only had an economic impact but also a cultural and diplomatic one. An example of this is that the regime changed the official discourse about the exiles, who went from being “worms” to forming the “Cuban community abroad.”

However, the report warned about a process of dismantling this dependency between emigrants and Cubans residing on the Island.

According to a recent study by the Cuba Siglo 21 ideas laboratory, remittances to Cuba totaled 1,972.56 million dollars in 2023, which represents a drop of 3.31% compared to 2022.
