Remembering Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s Wedding, Like a Fairy Tale but Ended in Divorce

JAKARTA – Wedding Prince Charles and Princess Diana so caught the world’s attention, like a fairy tale, followed by the birth of two princes. However, what was seen was not as sweet as in their household as members of the Kingdom.

Lady Diana who is 20 years old and married to Prince Charles who was 32 at the time. The two tied the knot at St Paul’s Cathedral, in front of 3,500 guests on July 29, 1981.

The wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was hailed as the ‘wedding of the century’, with a record 750 million people in 74 countries around the world watching the event on television.

“I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn’t take my eyes off him,” Diana told writer Andrew Morton.

“I really think I’m the luckiest girl in the world. He’s going to take care of me,” Diana said again.

This joyous occasion marks the first time a British citizen has married the heir to the throne in 300 years.

However, before the wedding, the Prince told the BBC he was ‘delighted and amazed’ that Diana was ‘ready’ to marry him. However, he disappointed his future wife when asked if they were in love.

Diana replied, ‘Of course,’ while Charles quipped, ‘Whatever love means’ – a comment he believed would be ‘traumatic’.

Diana then showed off her £47,000 engagement ring from Garrard jewellers. It was a 12 carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by 14 diamonds, set in 18 carat white gold.

According to journalist Penny Junor’s book, The Duchess: The Untold Story, Charles sent Diana a signet ring with a picture of the Prince of Wales’ feathers, accompanied by a note that read: ‘I’m so proud of you and when you turn up, I’ll be there at the altar for you tomorrow. Just look them in the eye and smack them dead.’

However, Diana’s personal astrologer Penny Thornton claimed in an ITV documentary that the monarch also had a very bad confession about his wife.

“One of the most shocking things Diana told me was that the night before the wedding Charles told her he didn’t love her,” Thornton said.

“I think Charles didn’t want to go to the wedding for the wrong reasons. He wanted to work it out with her and that was very damaging to Diana,” he said.
