As a place with a rich heritage of various religions and beliefs, this diversity has shaped the island’s cultural identity and history for centuries.
Based on the 2001 census conducted in areas controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, excluding Turkish-recognized Northern Cyprus, the following is the religious composition of the Republic of Cyprus:
1. Eastern Orthodox Church or Orthodox Christianity
As many as 94.8% of the population of the Republic of Cyprus, excluding Northern Cyprus, claim to be adherents of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The dominant religion in Cyprus is Orthodox Christianity.
The majority of Kipros’ Greek citizens are members of the autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church.
The church has a Greek liturgical tradition and recognizes the seniority of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople, while maintaining administrative autonomy under his archbishop.
2. Armenian Apostolic Church
About 0.9% of the total population claims to be a follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Greek Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Maronite and Latin Catholic Churches are constitutionally recognized and exempt from taxes.
The majority of Armenians in Cyprus are adherents of the Armenian Apostolic Church, one of the oldest Christian churches founded in the 1st century AD.
In 301 AD, Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as a state religion.
The Armenian Apostolic Church has ancient liturgical traditions and is part of the Eastern Orthodox family of churches.
