Regime will sell cake modules, cookies, syrup

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The government of Sancti Spíritus announced on Monday that it will begin selling “very sweet” modules for those who turn 15 years old.

According to a note from the local media EscambrayStarting this July and on a permanent basis, the delivery of a food module for children who turn 15 years old will begin.

Amid a dire food shortage and growing popular discontent over government management, Ariel Fernández Martín, director of the Business Group of Commerce in Sancti Spíritus, pointed out that the module is made up of various foods that could be used for a birthday celebration.

“It includes the right to purchase a cake, sandwich bread, cookies, cheese, cream cheese, a bag of soft drinks or syrup, a package of hot dogs and a one-kilogram tube of ham,” he specified.

The products, which will be sold at a “modest” price, will benefit 421 young people in July, “in response to the country’s policy of caring for children and youth.”

These modules will be strictly controlled by the supply book in the retail units of each territory, whether in the urban, rural or Plan Turquino area, based on the census of the Commercial Registry Offices.

Food “backups”

This month the regime announced that it would provide “support” food to pregnant women and children registered as underweight and undersized in the summer.

During July and August, a separate delivery of one kilogram of fish will be made to pregnant women, and a module containing one kilogram of biscuits, one kilogram of sweet biscuits, sherbet and syrup will be made to children registered as being underweight and undersized.

The announcement was made during a press conference where Anayra Cabrera, director general of industrial policy at the Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL) said that the “standardized family food basket is a priority, as are the differentiated deliveries to children, pregnant women and vulnerable people.”

For his part, the deputy head of the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, acknowledged that situations of vulnerability and inequality have increased in Cuba.
