MEXICO CITY (apro).- The Chamber of Deputies approved a reform to prohibit children under 12 years of age from traveling on motorcycles.
With 409 votes in favor, 25 against and zero abstentions, legislators approved the opinion that modifies the General Law of Mobility and Road Safety, which will go to the Senate of the Republic for discussion.
The reform has the objective of prohibiting any person, driver and/or passenger under 12 years of age from traveling on a motorcycle when they cannot secure themselves to said vehicle or when they cannot properly place their feet on the stirrups or footrests.
This, in order to prevent accidents and reduce the incidence of serious and fatal injuries, as well as improve road safety and protect the physical integrity of motorcycle users.
The initiative adds section XV to the third paragraph of article 49 and establishes a transitional article for state legislatures to adapt their legislation within a maximum period of 150 business days from the entry into force of the decree.
PAN representative Georgina Gómez Madrigal argued that this is a measure to guarantee road safety conditions and thus prevent accidents and avoid loss of human life.
In 2022, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that the figures for land traffic accidents were 377,231 accidents, 5,181 deaths and 91,501 injuries.
