The presentation will be led by Ezequiel Ipar, who holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sao Paulo (USP); CONICET researcher and Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Alexis Gros from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena will moderate the event.

“The growth of authoritarianism on a global level has become an urgent issue for social criticism. In many cases, these neo-authoritarian ideologies function as pseudo-ideological solutions to real problems of global capitalism that do not find answers in traditional democratic parties. This weakness, which risks turning into impotence, affects an idea that has driven social criticism since the Second World War, I am referring to the idea of democracy. Social criticism has always faced a paradox with respect to this idea. It insistently resorts to the normative content of the idea of democracy, without ceasing to subject it to criticism in several fundamental aspects. In my presentation, I will be interested in reflecting on the meaning that the idea of democracy has for us when we use it in a differentiated way in social criticism,” explains Ipar.

This activity is part of the 2024 cycle of the Interregional and International Colloquium on Human and Social Sciences (CIHUSO). It is organized by the Doctorate in Critical Theory and Current Society of the Andrés Bello University, Chile; the Doctorate in Communication of the Universidad de la Frontera and the Austral University of Chile; the Gino Germani Research Institute and the Contemporary Critical Theory Studies Group (GETeCC) of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Research Group on Critical Theory of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru; the Critical Theory Group of the University of Valencia, Spain; and the Social Philosophy Studies Group of the University of Alcalá, Spain.
