Red Sea / Fire on cargo ship from double missile strike – Reportedly Greek-owned

Another commercial ship was hit by two missiles today causing it to break out fire in it, an attack that occurred southeast of Aden in Yementhe UK Maritime Safety Office (UKMTO) announced, as reported by the Reuters and relays the AMPE.

“A ship was attacked by two missiles resulting in a fire,” UKMTO said, adding that US-led “coalition forces are responding to the incident”.

The Associated Press it adds that a Houthi missile attack “set fire to a ship in the Gulf of Aden on Thursday”. According to Britain’s Naval Operations Centre, “Thursday’s attack in the Gulf of Aden involved two missiles being fired” and the unnamed ship on fire.

However, from the data on websites who monitor the course of merchant ships internationally, the ship is reported to be the Islander truck with Palau flagwhich was chartering from Thailand to Egypt.

In the same report it is noted that the ship broadcast a message that it carries a crew of Syrian nationalityin a possible attempt not to become the target of an attack.

It is noted that specialized shipping sites list a company based in Athens as the owner/operatoralthough the Associated Press reports that the ship’s owners “are registered in Liberia”.
