Red LED lights and lube: Southeast building closed for illegal prostitution

Earlier this month, the municipality closed down a house in Zuidoost because alleged illegal prostitution was taking place there. Municipal investigators discovered this through an announcement that appeared on the internet. Police say no one has been arrested.

Supervisors scheduled an appointment with the woman offering sex in the ad. On January 5, they rang the doorbell and the woman they had an appointment with opened the door. “The police noticed that the woman was dressed scantily,” reads the closure order.

After the visitors announced that they were supervisors, they entered the house for an inspection. Once inside, they saw that the bedroom was furnished “to receive clients”. The room was lit with red LED lights and on a table were paper towels, condoms and lube. There appeared to be a camera in the corner of the room.

At least two prostitutes worked in the house. The woman who answered the door said she had been in the Netherlands for 15 days. Supervisors later discovered that a second prostitute was hiding behind a couch in the house. You stated, among other things, that you had received a punch in the mouth three days earlier from a customer who wanted your money back (150 euros).

Money in the envelope

According to supervisors, the sex workers were part of an app group with two men and a woman who organized the ads and clients. The sex workers paid them 50% of their income. They said they had to put the money in an envelope in the letterbox every day. The money is said to have been collected at different times by someone the prostitutes never spoke to.

The camera hanging in the room was discovered when police heard a beep while checking. One of the sex workers reportedly said the device was always on: “Even when I sleep.”

The supervisors worked as part of the prostitution administrative team. Within this team they work together with the police and the Prosecutor’s Office. Without a permit, prostitution is illegal. Such permits are issued in so-called prostitution areas, such as De Wallen.
